Career Education & Development


“Career education is the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes through a planned program of learning experiences in education and training settings to assist students to make informed decisions about their study and/or work options and enable effective participation in working life.”


St Brigid’s College uses the Victorian Careers Curriculum Framework to help develop quality Career Education.
The goals of the Victorian Careers Curriculum Framework are to assist young people to:

  • Understand and manage influences relating to career planning and lifelong learning;
  • Develop skills, knowledge and capabilities to make career decisions;
  • Apply their learning to achieve educational and career aspirations; and
  • Build resilience in their capacity to manage change throughout their lives.

These goals are organised into three Stages of Career Development:

  • Self-Development: young people understand themselves and the influences on them, build their experiences and achievements and develop their capabilities.
  • Career Exploration: young people locate, investigate and consider opportunities in learning and future work options.
  • Career Management: young people make and adjust Career Action Plans and manage their life choices, changes and transitions.

Six Steps of Career Self-Management

  • Year 7 – I Discover: Young people discover their strengths and talents;
  • Year 8 – I Explore: Young people explore the world of work and their place in it;
  • Year 9 – I Focus: Young people focus on their values and interests;
  • Year 10 -I Plan: Young people use decision-making skills to plan their learning and career programs;
  • Year 11 – I Decide: Young people decide on their best options and opportunities; and
  • Year 12 – I Apply: Young people apply their skills and knowledge to their learning and career planning.

Career Development

“Career development is the process of managing learning, work, leisure, and transitions throughout life to meet our personal aspirations and goals.”

 St Brigid’s College provides students with career development opportunities.

These services equip students with knowledge, skills and capabilities to become self-reliant career managers whom can make the best possible educational, training and occupational choices and manage their life, learning and work in rapidly changing labour markets.

Programs and support services can include:

  • Careers counselling advice through personal interviews and group discussions
  • Careers information – printed and electronic resources
  • Career testing tools – Job Outlook, MyFuture and Skillsroad etc.
  • Career action plans – refer the careers curriculum framework
  • Career education – Year 10 Pathways to the Future
  • Workplace learning – Work Experience and structured workplace learning.
  • Telephone advice and online help
